Want to know more about Turmeric?
It is said that turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. In recent years there have been many high-quality studies that show that it has major benefits for the body and brain. Below are 6 evidence-based health benefits of turmeric and curcumin.
Studies have shown that curcumin can be effective in the treatment of arthritis. As a powerful anti-inflammatory it may be as effective as anti-inflammatory drugs, without the side-effects.
2. BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS
Curcuminoids, compounds found in turmeric, have powerful medicinal properties. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric and this has been shown to be a powerful anti-inflammatory and a very strong antioxidant. However, because curcumin only makes up about 3% of turmeric, it is extracted by a special concentrating process that maximizes these benefits. Additionally, because curcumin is not easily absorbed into the bloodstream, a small amount of black pepper extract called piperine is added. We use a proprietary brand call Bioperine.
3. CURCUMIN AS A NATURAL ANTI-INFLAMMATORY
Inflammation happens when the body is fighting something that is trying to invade, for example, if you cut yourself you notice that the surrounding area gets sore and inflamed. This is the body getting rid of anything that may cause harm, like bacteria. In the short-term this is beneficial, but if inflammation continues it may become a problem and it is understood that long-term inflammation may be responsible for many of the diseases that are so prevalent in Western society today. The list includes:
Arthritis and other degenerative conditions
Fighting inflammation may be an important weapon in the armoury for fighting these conditions and it has been shown that curcumin is as effective as some anti-inflammatory drugs as it is able to fight inflammation at the molecular level without side-effects.
4. TURMERIC AS AN ANTIOXIDANT
You may have heard of free radicals but not sure what they are. These are highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons which tend to react with important organic substances such as fatty acids, proteins or DNA. This can cause oxidative damage which may be responsible for aging and many diseases. Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals and also boosts the activity of the body’s own antioxidant enzymes.
5. BRAIN FUNCTION
Many common brain disorders have been linked to decreased levels of a type of growth hormone called Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the brain. Although it used to be believed that neurons in the brain were unable to divide and multiply after early childhood, it is now known that this is untrue and that neurons are able to form new connections, and in some areas of the brain to multiply. Curcumin has been shown to increase levels of BDNF in the brain and so could be effective in the battle against brain-related disorders including depression and Alzheimer’s disease.
6. HEART DISEASE
With heart disease being the biggest killer in the world there has been a lot of research over decades to learn how it happens and how it can be prevented. It’s a very complicated disease with a number of factors to take into consideration but it would appear that curcumin may help to reverse many of these. The endothelium is the lining of the blood vessels and is involved in, amongst other processes, the regulation of blood pressure and blood clotting. In some studies curcumin has been shown to have a positive effect on endothelial function. Also it may be as effective as exercise, and can work as well as Atorvastatin.
In addition to this benefit, the ability of curcumin to reduce inflammation and oxidation is also important in the treatment of heart disease. One study showed that patients taking 4 grams of curcumin a day had a 65% decreased risk of having a heart attack in hospital before and after undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery than those taking a placebo.
